Complex Shapes

TO draw complex shapes you have to see the simple shapes (circle, square/rectangle, cone) in them. For this assignment we were tasked with drawing 5 objects with unordinary shapes. I found a few things lying around my condo, set up my drawing nook with a fixed spotlight on the table and went to work. The stapler consists of a rectangular shape, the hat has elements of a circle, the paper flower and vase are circle and rectangle respectively, the chip clip is also a rectangle and circle while the headphones are based off of circles. Once I found the basic shapes in each of the objects, I utilized their basic form to draw each object. I also brought in 2-point perspective into consideration.

My drawing was going to be just pencil, but I struggled with getting the values correctly since the colors in the objects weren’t as obvious to me this time. So, I changed course and added colored pencil to the drawing. I started the background in vine charcoal but it wasn’t working. I did my best to clean it up and erase it but it still lingers there behind the brown colored pencil.

I’m very happy with how the hat and stapler turned out. I realize the glass vase could use more “polish” (pun intended!). It would require taking an eraser to let the highlights POP! more. I really like how the texture of the headphone cushions turned out.
